What does lending discrimination look like?

These are just a few examples of lending discrimination. The Center has brought discrimination complaints based on redlining, discrimination against families with children, discrimination against part time employment, discrimination against a particular type of loan, and appraisal discrimination.

Banks refuse or fail to make loans in your neighborhood, or they make loans that are more costly than loans they make in other neighborhoods because the neighborhood has a concentration of members of a protected class, such as race or national origin.

Banks charge you more for loans, or fail to provide equal levels of assistance with loan applications, or offer different loan products because you are a member of a protected class, such as race or national origin.

Banks steer you away from neighborhoods by telling you you could not afford it, or steer you into loan products that have worse terms because you are a member of a protected class, such as race or national origin.

Appraisers determine that your property is worth less because you are a member of a protected class, such as race or national origin.
